Boondocking is the primary use of this stealth van , yet a 15 amp RV hookup cable will be installed to connect the electrical system to the grid, when hookups are available. Commercial campgrounds have never been my favorite places to stay, as I prefer the immersion that only nature can provide. But sometimes, when your black water tank fills up, fresh water is needed or your batteries run low, a campground visit may be required. Some form of access to the electrical system of the RV is necessary. One of the objectives of this van is its stealthy design. Any outward sign that identifies the van as an RV, should be avoided. The power cord enters the vehicle through an existing hole at the bottom of the B-pillar and will be connected to the 12V RV setup at the Murphy bed location. The keep the exposed part of the cable out-of-view and securely attached to the underside of the frame, I use a female 15 Amp connector, permanently attached to the underside of the frame.

There is now a choice of purchasing lightweight flexible polycrystalline solar panels. These could have been used to reduce the weight of our portable solar array, but we would have needed to build a frame, and these are not as solar efficient. Again we went for the higher priced, but more versatile and efficient unit.
A wide range of modern and stylish cooktops, entertainment systems, speakers, LED TVs and power cables and connectors for home, RVs and yachts.
The business began with consignment sales, parts, and service. Oliver and Marilyn did all the sales, sold all the parts and even serviced and cleaned the units themselves. In , we expanded to a new location, adding several employees and increases to our inventory. Today, Copley’s RV Center sits on 4 acres, and has generated over 50 million dollars in sales over the last 31 years. Fantastic service, great selection, and customer approval are just a few of the benefits we have to offer.
Customers feel comfortable as soon as they enter the dealership lobby because of the friendly, family atmosphere.

Heading towards Mono Lake, with solar on top. Or you may have noticed that Cherie teased about leaving me behind visiting friends at AM Solar while she headed off to visit her mom in Florida. Included will be our on-going testing results of comparing flexible panels from GoPower, Renogy and Grape Solar. Our goal is to design a system for Zephyr capable of powering the bulk of our typical energy needs for several days without needing to regularly resort to a generator.
We expect that this will require somewhere between W to W of solar, with the ultimate goal being to install as much power as we can while still looking good. We knew from the beginning that keeping our curved-roof vintage bus looking good was going to be particularly challenging.
AC WIRING HOOKUP TO YOUR RV ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. Inverter/chargers have a unique feature that allows automatic operation when wired into the RV’s electrical system. HOW IT WORKS. The INVERTER supplies VAC to selected plugs, microwave oven or TV/VCR sets 24 hours a day while dry camping.

Awning On most newer RVs, the manufacturer includes a roll-out awning. The awning can be either manually operated or it can be operated electrically.
Another type of awning used by RVers is a portable pop-up canopy or tent that provides a temporary solution to people who want to be outdoors and enjoy shade. The frame usually incorporates an accordion style truss which folds up compactly. Some of these awnings have side curtains that can keep out wind and bugs. Bull-nose front end Commonly seen on class A motorhomes where the angle of the front of the vehicle leans forward.

To find out how many amps your panels produce, simply look on the label or read the spec sheet. This allows for excessive power generation caused by “edge of cloud” effects. For example, you have 2 panels and they each produce 9 amps. Together that is 18 amps. You should look for a charge controller that rates at a minimum of 25 amps. Don’t worry, I had to read that a few times myself before it sank in.

Click the button to see our most recent upgrades: Then we were introduced to the watt Portable Solar Kit. Needless to say we were sold on the upgrade. After leaving the show we did a little research on the company and found they offer a host of other solar powered products. The item that really caught our eye is the watt continuous pure sine wave inverter. Solar Extreme Kit and comes with: This has us realizing we have more than enough solar coming in, just not enough batteries to fill with that power.
A pure sine inverter operates just like household power. Basically if you can run it inside your house it will work in your RV.

To install solar power in your trailer, you have to determine how much power you have to generate and how much storage you need. You free yourself from using only serviced camp sites and don’t have to put up with noisy generators. Loads You can save money by reducing your electric consumption to a minimum, since solar panels and batteries are expensive.

I like flexible solar panels because they allow your roof to remain accessible. They can also increase the stealth factor by remaining undetectable from ground level. So far they have performed well for me. Read more on Amazon Extension Cables with MC4 Connectors In order to connect the panels to my existing solar array, I needed additional cables of various lengths.
All have MC4 connectors for easy hookup. Read more on Amazon Butyl Seal Tape If you decide to mount the solar panels using screws, then I recommend using Butyl tape like I demonstrated in the video. Butyl tape is typically used to seal up opennings on your RV roof, so small pieces are great for sealing up screw holes. Use it to cover the screws and around the edges of your fan.

Each cell, when fully charged, will produce close to 2. It takes 6 cells connected in series Of course it only takes three cells to make a 6 volt battery that, when full charged, will produce about 6. It doesn’t matter how big the lead-acid cells are they will still only produce 2. The two batteries are ruffly the same size and weight but the 12 volt battery has 6 cells while the 6 volt battery three. We can assume the cells in the 6 volt batter are larger and contain more lead than the cells in the 12 volt battery.

Considering the ever increasing price of fuel it really is a no brainer. Not to mention the reduction or even elimination of the wear and tear on the RV generator itself! A fairly common “irritation” out in the woods, for many RVers, is the RV “neighbor” who serenades us with the never ending drone of their RV generator. Cut your neighbors a break and install an solar power system on your home on wheels! With a properly designed and installed RV solar power system you can greatly reduce or even eliminate the demand to run a generator.
Many times you will find that a properly sized solar panel array will provide sufficient power so that you rarely need to even fire up ol’ squeal and belch to top off your RV battery bank. However, although I prefer to do the majority of the work on my own RV, this is one time where I am a bit intimidated by the technology! I have lined up a qualified mentor to help with my installation! There is quite a bit involved.
RV solar panels and their mounting racks need to be installed on the roof. Wiring then needs to be run down to the charge controller, the inverter and any power monitors you might choose to use. Wiring of the proper gauge needs to be run from the inverter to your battery bank. The RV battery bank! You’ll need to significantly enlarge and upgrade your factory RV battery bank for a proper system.

I made a couple videos about the install that you may want to check out. They provide some good information to help others in their potential solar system installs. However, I wanted to create an article where I could share with more details my experience and recommendations with solar panel unit installations. I did a lot of research before and during my install.
My hope is that this article combines the research I did with the personal experience I had and provides you with enough information to get you prepared, equipped and excited for your solar system installation. I have broken this article up into a few sections based on the most common questions I have been asked about our new solar system.
I have also provided links to all the products that I used and recommend to make your life easier when deciding on what you need. How does it work? Are you ready for some science? Here is a super-duper-basic explanation of solar power. Solar power converts sun energy into electricity. This repeated action creates enough electricity to be harnessed and stored in batteries. DC battery power can then be inverted into AC power and used to run standard electronics.
Solar Power Basics
Does the overloaded wiring just get hot, or can it actually catch on fire? But as I like to say, seeing is believing. Current overload can be caused by things like additive neutral currents from a bootleg volt outlet, or using a dog-bone adapter to step from a amp pedestal outlet to a gauge extension cord, or simply by plugging too many portable space heaters onto a circuit.

When the vehicle engine is not needed, batteries are still fully charged by sunlight every sunny day. Solar electric charging allows full time living with rarely ever needing outside hookup or generator. The power requirements are a lot less in RV and marine living than a conventional home, because the living space is limited and, unlike most homes, the RV or boat has already been carefully engineered for utmost energy efficiency. The cost of solar equipment to recharge the coach batteries is easily kept to the lower range of off grid power systems.
Solar Charging Explained 10 gauge wires connect the modules to a charge control mounted flush in a cabinet wall inside. This small device automatically stops the charge when the batteries become fully charged, and should have meters to show you the progress of solar battery charging. From the charge control, wires lead direct to the batteries through a fuse.
This is all of the solar charging system. More Ways to Use the Available Power Usually an inverter is added to a mobile home or boat, to change battery power into standard household type AC electricity so you can plug in a computer, vacuum, larger TV and satellite system, power tools, and other appliances. Inverters sized for to watts are a common mobile choice, because these will run small appliances including computer equipment, large televisions and satellite receivers, vacuum cleaner, handheld power tools, and smaller microwave ovens.
If a clothes washer or larger microwave oven are included, an inverter rated watts might be best. Many inverters are called standby inverters, which means they also function as a battery charger and automatic transfer switch when power is provided from an outside source, either shore power or a generator.
